At Temple Beth Rishon, we gather together on Shabbat to pray, learn and celebrate life cycle events, including bar/bat mitzvahs, baby namings, auf-rufs, birthdays and anniversaries. Our Rabbi leads the service of traditional prayer, sermons and Torah readings. The Cantor’s vocalization offers musical support, leading the congregation in traditional melodies, classical expressions of music and contemporary arrangements. Our adult and teen choirs often participate in our services lending their voices to enhance our prayer. These dynamic elements combine together to provide quite a meaningful ambiance for our celebration of Shabbat.
We are an egalitarian congregation so all members are free to participate in all aspects of the service. Our clergy uses this blend of prayer, education and music throughout the year, including during our festival and High Holiday services making TBR a unique place to worship. We take great pride in providing an exceptional service experience to our congregants and guests. We are pleased to offer a wide range of service experiences throughout the year as follows:
Shabbat (Friday) Evening Services - Our Friday evening congregational service begins at 7:30PM and welcomes the Sabbath with prayer, joyous song and a thought-provoking sermon. After services, we share an Oneg, enjoying a litte dessert and an opportunity to meet with friends, visitors and newcomers.
Musical Shabbats - Several times throughout the year, the Cantor organizes and performs creative and inspiring musical Friday Evening Shabbats. Some examples of the variety of musical themes features are:
-CARLEBACH SHABBAT, featuring the music of the renowned composer Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach. -SHABBAT TZAVTA, a folk rock Shabbat with guest artists. -SHABBAT SHIRA, featuring our adult and children's choirs. -SHABBAT LA VIDA LOCA, an upbeat service, featuring Jewish music of South America -SHABBAT EVENING CONCERTS, immediately following services, which feature guest artists performing culturally diverse Jewish music.
Family Service and Dinner (Friday evening) - Twice during the school year, TBR adds a relaxed, informal and engaging Shabbat Evening service specifically geared towards Religious School aged children and their families. The service is about 35 minutes long, age appropriate and is followed by a delicious dinner and activities for the children.
Community Tot Shabbat (Friday Evening) - Periodically during the school year, TBR offers a Preschool friendly Shabbat featuring songs and stories with the Rabbi. The event begins at 4:00PM and is followed by a family dinner at 4:45PM to fill those little tummies. It is free of charge and open to the community.
Home Hospitality Shabbat (Friday evening in the Summer) - One Friday evening in the summer, services are held at the home of a congregant, outdoors in their back yard. This friendly heimish service is followed by a delicious dinner which the congregants share in preparing.
Shabbat Morning services (Saturday morning) - Our Saturday morning congregational service begins at 10:00AM (in July & August, we begin at 8:30AM.) Shabbat morning provides an opportunity to celebrate the Sabbath among family and friends with a service filled with songs, prayer, Torah reading and discussion. Often, we are fortunate to join in celebrating the simcha of a bar or bat mitzvah with their families.
Meditative Shabbat Service(Saturday morning) - Approximately once a month, Rabbi Ziona Zelazo conducts an alternative Shabbat morning service which focuses on prayers from the heart expressed in a slow pace. This relaxing service allows for reflection on feelings and emotions. With gentle breathing, the body relaxes connecting us with the divine and your very own soul. You are welcome to join the main congregational services after the Meditative Shabbat Service has finished. Check the calendar for the schedule.
